Yoga Routine For Lower Back Pain
Here is a great video by Esther Ekhart showing us some simple yoga poses that we can do to combat or prevent lower back pain. She makes some excellent points for people who are new to yoga and those that have practiced for a while. Here’s a breakdown of my main takeaways from this video.
- It is very important not to go beyond your comfort zone especially if you are in pain. If it hurts, back off from it.
- Use your breath to breathe into the area that’s a problem.
- Pay attention to details. The difference between and effective and ineffective pose usually comes down to maintaining body position through a pose.
- Don’t feel overwhelmed and take your time with each pose.
About Yoga
I’ve been a long time neck and middle back pain sufferer and have started doing yoga within the last year. The thing that most people don’t realize is that it is an all inclusive holistic system which helps your digestion, muscle tone, balance, joint health and sense of well-being.
The biggest misconception about yoga is that it is some far out system that only spiritually enlightened mystics practice. The truth is yoga is accessible to anybody at any level of physical conditioning.
The most important things I have found for a successful yoga practice is to find a local teacher that can fine tune your practice but to also be able to do it at home. There are a number of yoga videos out there. I know for a fact that Yoga Journal has free video podcasts you can put on your mobile device and either play through your home theater system or take them with you for your hotel room if you are traveling. I would also recommend Esther’s latest video for beginners.

I have chronic neck pain too and have already found some relief from other videos of hers. She’s very thorough.
A great YouTube find.
Yoga is a great exercise for the lower back and every joint in the body. The key to minimizing back pain is maintaining full and proper range of motion. Yoga is an excellent way to do that.
Dr. Freytag,
Thanks for stopping by and letting us know what you think. I’ve been doing yoga for just around 9 months and have seen the positive results for my neck and shoulder problems already.
